One of the main uses of a metal garage is for parking your car in and keeping it protected from the elements. It has many other uses aside from this obvious one however. A metal garage can also be used as a storage space for your tools and gardening equipment. A pre built metal garage that you assemble yourself is also very easy to build, especially if it comes in kit form.

A metal garage can also be put together quite easily. Almost every metal garage that you can buy on the market is designed for do it yourself assembly and does not really require much in the way of tools and equipment. Even if you do not have any previous experience building a metal garage, you should get by with very little difficulty.

It is also quite easy to find a metal garage, either in a home supply store or on the Internet. There are also a lot of options for a metal garage in terms of size, style and design, and they are generally quite affordable.

Building your own metal garage is a good alternative to having one specially built for a number of reasons. For one thing, you will be saving a lot of money with a self built metal garage that comes in a kit. You also have a lot more options with regard to building your metal garage to the exact size and style you want. A further advantage is that you can build your metal garage according to your own schedule without having to conform to a busy builder’s timetable.

Of course a metal garage is a lot hardier and more durable than a similar structure made out of wood. In addition, a metal garage will hold up against natural elements a lot better, and will last longer than other types of garages.

As we mentioned earlier, a metal garage has a lot more uses than for merely parking your car in. They also make excellent storage spaces, which we all need from time to time. Items that you don’t use very often yet want to have easy access too such as tools and athletic equipment can be placed in a metal garage where they are out of the way. In a pinch, a metal garage can also make a great workshop, and even a playing space for your kids provided you clear out any potentially accident causing objects.

Quonset huts, those ubiqutous arched metal buildings that still dot our landscape today, originated and were constructed at a U.S. Naval facility in Quonset, Rhode Island for use during World War II. Originally modeled after the semicylindrical British Nissen hut, Quonset hut creators modified the Nissen design to include a wooden lining, insulation, and tongue and groove wooden flooring. A commemorative Quonset huts display located at the Seabee Museum and Memorial Park in Davisville, Rhode Island honors both the original Quonset huts factory in Davisville and the historic connection between Quonset huts and the Seabees.

The beauty of Quonset huts lay in their durability and mobility in the field. The military needed something that could be quickly and easily assembled and taken apart for transport to the next location, sometimes every day. Quonset huts successfully addressed the need for lightweight and movable storage and housing and gradually evolved into structures that could be used as bakeries, showers, latrines, dental offices, and isolation wards. Their initial design presented problems with these expanded uses and was subsequently modified from its original sixteen feet by thirty six feet size with wall curve beginning immediately at its floor to a structure with sidewalls and multiple interior designs. After the war ended, the military sold its surplus Quonset huts to the public for one thousand dollars per unit. Universities purchased them for student housing, and some returning soldiers even purchased them for their own personal housing.

The Quonset huts of today are so versatile that they are perfect for machinery or grain storage, backyard workshops, or even airplane hangars. Or, how about a guest cottage made from a Quonset hut. The lack of beams and trusses in the Quonset hut design equals 100 percent useable space, and the huts can be expanded to any length simply by adding additional sidewall panels. You can also customize Quonset huts with skylights, insulation, wiring, and colors that match the exterior of your home. With their corrugated steel construction, Quonset huts are amazingly strong; in fact, their rounded arch design is one of the strongest structures in architecture. Quonset huts can withstand anything Mother Nature can throw at them.

With the help of a few buddies, you can assemble your Quonset hut in just a few days. Once you have laid your foundation (on a graded and level surface), you simply bolt the steel panels together and your Quonset hut is ready to go. Adding durable and attractive storage or workshop space has never been easier.

Quonset huts are a kind of prefabricated steel building, known for their arched shape, first used by the military during World War II. They are named for Quonset Point, Rhode Island, where they were originally manufactured. Then, as now, they were built using corrugated steel. No professional assembly is required to install the huts, and they are light weight and inexpensive.

Today, Quonset huts have found their way into the private sector. During America’s post war era, the military sold many left over Quonset huts to the public for a thousand dollars per building. Ever since, the huts have become widespread. The design has changed some over the years, such as the introduction of walls that are shaped to stand at a ninety degree angel to allow for optimal storage space, steel fronts and backs instead of the original plywood, and a variety of colors. Yet the roofs remain rounded, so they have the same easy maintenance as always. No worries about cleaning off or repair the roof!

Who uses Quonset huts? They are the practical and cost effective solution for many businesses, farms, and more. The simple arch construction makes them popular. Because of this, all the Quonset hut needs is a roof and two walls. Less parts equals cheaper construction. Putting them together is a snap, too. No professional builders are needed, though some companies provide the service if wanted.

How are Quonset huts used? They are often used to store boats, RVs, tractors, and trucks. These huts also make excellent shops for small businesses who don’t want the high overhead of a more traditional building. Hobbyists who have the room can also build their own shops for things like pottery and ceramics, furniture reupholstery, car repair, photography dark rooms, and so on. As for agriculture, Quonset huts are a no brainer, as farms across America can attest.

One curiousity of the Quonset hut are those individuals who have made the huts into residential housing. This is a historical as well as modern phenomenon. A model for domestic use, created by the Great Lakes Steel Corporation that took over Quonset hut manufacture in 1943, was introduced in 1946, featuring windows on the arch and a little bit of white picket fencing. Recently, as a way to live more green, a few inventive types have even used Quonset huts as “shells” for their underground homes, which need hardly any energy to heat or cool.

Quonset hut simply refers to semi cylindrical structures of lightweight metal. The most common form of Quonset Hut is made from iron or stainless steel which is covered with a relatively less reactive metal to protect iron from getting converted into rust which is further bent to give a semicircular shape. The structure is so called since it was first manufactured in a place called Quonset Point in a village called Davisville in Rhode Island. Steel gives robustness and flexibility to these structures In some cases the use of punched or holed sheets was found to decrease weight and increase malleability.Recently PVC players have also ventured into the production of Quonset huts and have found great success in the wake of their durability and low maintenance.

The first customers of this structure were interestingly the US Navy which was looking for a resilient and versatile building structure to cater their immediate needs to harbor safely their arms, soldiers and other supplies during the Second World War. The advantages were many including mobility and easy construction. Most importantly the structure is weatherproof. Soon this product became popular with the common masses and was immediately accepted and put to various uses like running a warehouse, garage, hangar, retail stores, inventories etc.
Another factor responsible for the popularity of Quonset Huts is its economic viability, that is to say they are comparatively low priced when weighed against their traditional counterparts like concrete etc. Due to the size of the structure it is first manufactured in parts in the factory and later transported to the place where it is required to be put together. One drawback that it has is that they do not give much scope of change in the basic structure and one can not install doors and windows at desired places. Some manufacturers also provide a guide to the assembly of them and they can be easily put to one piece without assistance of skilled labor in this regard. However, while taking orders the manufacturer may allow some alteration to suit the likes and needs of the procurer.

Today there are various private manufactures willing to cater to the need of the customers across the globe. This metal structure in itself has revolutionized the agriculture industry in many countries and is being rapidly adopted in farms for storing grains and cattle against the odds of weather. It would not be a surprise if this innovative housing solution revolutionizes the concept of urban dwelling considering it gives symmetrical structures covering 720 to 1200 meter squares of land for low cost. Markets is also not devoid of players who offer to provide fancy partition inside them to grow separate rooms etc.It can be safely concluded that metal structures have to go far ahead in their journey of fame and popularity with the masses.
